A petition calling on the government to reduce the maximum permitted noise level of fireworks has surpassed 100,000 signatures as of Monday 3 November. Set up by Redwings less than two months ago, the petition will now be considered for debate in Parliament.
The petition requests that the maximum noise level for consumer fireworks be lowered from 120 decibels to 90 decibels. With over 110,000 signatures in just eight weeks, it highlights the strong public support for this measure.
The government had previously responded to the petition on 23 October, stating:
“The Government recognises that some people have strong feelings about fireworks and has been listening to concerns raised by members of the public regarding the impact of firework noise.”
Now that the petition has surpassed 100,000 signatures, the government is obliged to schedule a debate in Parliament to discuss the proposal.
The timing is particularly relevant as fireworks season 2026 approaches, when horses, dogs, and other animals are most affected by loud, sudden noises. Redwings and supporters hope the petition will raise awareness of the impact of fireworks on equines, pets, and wildlife, encouraging safer celebrations for all.
The petition is still open for signatures here
